The Living Kitchen

Friday 11 December 2026

About this event

We’ll be bringing traditional food skills and science together in the kitchen! We’ll explore gluten-free baking, fermentation and the fascinating microorganisms involved in transforming our food. We’ll look at why ingredients behave differently, what happens during fermentation, how people preserved food before modern refrigeration and why fermented foods developed independently across so many traditional cultures. Then we’ll put it all into practice — mixing, fermenting, baking, tasting and making food together. A practical workshop combining food, microbiology, chemistry, traditional knowledge and plenty of hands-on learning. Suitable for children, teens and adults. For all workshops: No set age range and no classroom-style expectations. These are designed for people who enjoy learning through doing, experimenting, asking questions and experiencing things in the real world.
