We're kicking off a new series on the blog where we hand the mic over to real homeschooling families to share their story, in their own words. First up is a family from just outside Glenrowan in North East Victoria, whose days are shaped by horses, weather, and a whole lot of curiosity.

How long have you been homeschooling?
My eldest is 12, and has never been in any official form of schooling or education, so I guess 12 years?
What ages are your children?
I have a 12-year-old and a 9-year-old.
Where are you based?
We live just outside of Glenrowan in North East Victoria.
Why did you choose to homeschool?
Oh gosh, there are so many reasons. One of the big ones is, as a mental health worker, and a woman who has done a lot of inner work, I really see and feel that school can cause so much self-doubt, confidence issues and trauma that our children just don't need to be subjected to. It's not personalised to the individual, it's way too many hours of outside influence at vulnerable times in our children's lives, and I don't think it really sets our children up to thrive in their chosen vocations.

What do you love most about homeschooling?
The freedom to flow with interests, to follow passions, chase dreams and to adventure every day.
What has surprised you most about homeschooling?
A good surprise has been the beautiful feedback we get regarding homeschooled children being so amazing.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Managing my own frustration and trusting that I, and my kids, are doing "enough."
What does a typical week look like for your family?
Lots of horse riding and equine science, farming, adventuring, and always a big homeschool community meet-up in nature.
Do you follow a set timetable or take a more flexible approach?
Definitely a flexible approach. The weather is a big dictator for us.
What advice would you give to a family considering homeschooling?
Do it! Find your tribe, adventure always, and be curious about life. Every question can become a new thing to learn about.
What do you wish you had known when you first started?
I wish I knew I was doing the right thing. The self-doubt in the early days was no fun!
What would you love to see more of in the homeschool community?
Up here in the country, probably more organised activities and events, but it's definitely getting better.
What is one activity, business, class or resource you'd recommend to other homeschool families?
Drama classes! They've been amazing for so many things for my girls.
Describe your homeschool journey in three words.
Adventurous. Evolving. Flowing.
